I mean, maybe I'm still missing something, but that does sound like he didn't act out of his own desire to kill? Do you think he wasn't offering clearer answers out of his own will?
Yes. I interpret that to mean he was saying no to the theory of some sort of coercion and blackmail - we went on to talk about how the biggest motivation for blackmail would be his partner, but that wasn't enough to get him to kill on Thursday. And no to the idea that he had done it on his own.
My suspicion is he didn't have the ability to answer for whatever reason, but was trying his best to be helpful under those limitations.
Meaning that he was potentially being more literally controlled, similar to the expulsions.
