It would be like. . . I asked him outright and he would give vague answers. I tried to instead ask him what he thought about various theories floating around about motivations. To some he would say "that's interesting, I'm not sure." Whereas to others, he would say things such as. . . mm.

Yes. I interpret that to mean he was saying no to the theory of some sort of coercion and blackmail - we went on to talk about how the biggest motivation for blackmail would be his partner, but that wasn't enough to get him to kill on Thursday. And no to the idea that he had done it on his own.
My suspicion is he didn't have the ability to answer for whatever reason, but was trying his best to be helpful under those limitations.
