It would be like. . . I asked him outright and he would give vague answers. I tried to instead ask him what he thought about various theories floating around about motivations. To some he would say "that's interesting, I'm not sure." Whereas to others, he would say things such as. . . mm.
In response to me asking if he had killed for his own reasons, with no prompting from anyone else, he said "I'd like to think I'm not the type of person who would do that." And in response to me asking if he was being coerced somehow, he said "do you think that would work?"
I mean, maybe I'm still missing something, but that does sound like he didn't act out of his own desire to kill? Do you think he wasn't offering clearer answers out of his own will?
Yes. I interpret that to mean he was saying no to the theory of some sort of coercion and blackmail - we went on to talk about how the biggest motivation for blackmail would be his partner, but that wasn't enough to get him to kill on Thursday. And no to the idea that he had done it on his own.
My suspicion is he didn't have the ability to answer for whatever reason, but was trying his best to be helpful under those limitations.
Meaning that he was potentially being more literally controlled, similar to the expulsions.
[ He sighs, closing his eyes for a second. ]
It's certainly not out of the realm of possibility. We've seen how this place can alter minds. Not just compelling us to move one place or the other, but the field trips have demonstrated they can change our identities and memories.
I won't say I wasn't angry at the time, but it wasn't personal, and I can admit that I appeared suspicious. I owe Maya and Dimitri for repeatedly coming to my rescue.
No, nothing personal. We haven't talked much, but Byleth has told me a little about you, I know you aren't a bad guy. Seems like you don't have to be one to get mixed up in a murder here.
You're telling me. [ Claude also looks a little miserable in the cold. ] I asked for my wyvern back last week without even thinking what this weather would do to the poor girl.

Byleth suggested to me that it's likely something blackmailing them into silence. I didn't know Rupert well, but that seems true enough.

[Hmm.]
I'm not sure it's that. I felt that he was trying to answer my questions.

... All of which really sucks.

Well, I am sorry for giving you so much trouble over your shoulder.

No four-legged companion today?

. . . I knew about the wyvern. I suppose Mollymauk took the blame, but the little theft problem you had was my doing, I'm afraid. Extra credit.

And you chose me...?

[Shrugging! Not really apologetic!]

[ He crosses his arms, thinking about it. ]
So you picked someone already vulnerable, rife with blame and misunderstanding...

[ He laughs, giving Caleb a pat on the back. Touch week. ]
I doubt anyone in our dorm would give him trouble, though. He seems to have charmed everyone somehow.

[Accepting the pat, though he seems a little surprised.]
