Not necessarily to the individual, but the people around them. Optimism's the kind of thing that has you seeing the good in people who'd harm you, and people who care about you have to sit back and watch it happen.
Some people's mind's just work that way. Y'know, like... "it's fine if I die to save the world, at least it's not my friends" while the friends are distraught at the thought of losing that person.
