[there's a noise of interest, but he doesn't prompt claude to tell him and seems to be waiting to see if he'll share himself. instead, he chooses to answer the second part.]
I always thought it was just that we can't open the gate yet. That's what happened last time. We had to trigger it somehow before we could leave. But if there's something else...I don't even know where to start looking.
Neither do I. But obviously the people who have been born in this place travel freely...
At least that's what I assume. Maybe we should ask the dorm heads exactly how they got here? Perhaps the concept of one place relative to another isn't quite what we're used to, even in one "world".
I think we might all be going insane if you really wanna know. [just. offering that. but he frowns lightly.]
...Sally told me she used to commute here by train. Took her about half an hour. Viola's from the capitol, wherever that even is, and Chad says his family's too far from here to go back for most of the breaks except during the summers. I'm not sure about Luke though.
They all seem to be from this world. Just different parts of it.
Hm, so theoretically it can be travelled as it would be anywhere else. There was an island on that map—which is where I assumed this school to be, so I thought maybe there was... something strange about the location.
I don't know, for all that's happened I feel as though we're still not unravelling much.
I've kind of been thinking there's a barrier around us and that's why we can't actually leave. Sally told me that all of our applications had us marked with the option that we chose to stay here instead of leaving for school breaks because it was cheaper.
So...what, it costs something to open the portal out?
Do you think of yourself as untrustworthy? [it's a light question, and he shrugs instead.] I'm pretty sure Fall went completely overboard since they took more of our stuff than you took of theirs.
Yeah, my second-in-command always complained that I was "sketchy". [ It makes him laugh a little. ] But yeah, I think that's how dorm rivalries tend to go. I do feel bad for Chad though.
Sketchy doesn't always mean untrustworthy. But interesting to know. [wonder why that is.]
Chad'll be fine. He can't mind too much since he gave us a new toilet seat. [it's a joke, he does feel bad for chad as well.] Pretty sure the extra credit helps him though, too, in a roundabout way. So it's fine. And Fall will get over it.
[he doesn't entirely know how to answer that, but there's a slight grin.]
I guess so. [sometimes you have to present yourself as being laid back and calm in order to a.) help someone else stay chill and b.) grapple with your own chill. it's fine.] At this point I think it's important to remember what we're supposed to do here and not lose focus, but getting upset about the wrong things isn't going to help.
[mostly because there's never enough time for that.]
That's a pretty mature way of looking at it. But I agree, I don't think we should be causing each other grief over things when there's a much larger problem at hand.
[ ... ]
Much larger, if people are being swept away into life-threatening situations without a moment's notice.
The distraction isn't the worst thing to keep people from panicking too much, but...it's a balance, isn't it? Making sure things don't get too bad but also that people don't get too complacent.
[he shakes his head.] I really want to know how you guys were taken. There wasn't even time to prepare or anything? Were any of you together before that?
No kidding. Waking up here without warning was already pretty bad, but it was safer for a while. Something like that...there's always the possibility you won't be able to get back for a while. If at all.
What really bothers me is how the two groups didn't even overlap.

Or I could be steadily going insane.

[a pause.] Extra credit, too. Supposedly the more extra credit we do, the more information the dorm heads will have access to.

[ what is this mechanic... ]

That's... interesting. I hope my next extra credit assignment is not as troublesome as the last.

Yeah, I can't believe you started a different kind of war with yours. They could've just been patient and waited to get their couch back.

Caiman was probably just doing what he thought was right, the others probably went... overboard.
Or it could be my fault for being untrustworthy. I have heard that before.

No, I was alone in the library. I just blinked and woke up there. It really happened without any sign or warning... which is a little frightening.

I'm sure we'll see.

But you're right. We'll see if it comes down to that. [a pause.] Thanks for telling me all of this.
