[ it's okay if he dies he's anime ancient ]
I understand that you did what you thought was best, and I'm not naïve enough to believe that wars can be won without sacrifice.
But still, I find it terrible that you couldn't survive.

I appreciate your kindness, Claude-san.
[ that's sincere. she doesn't want to cause sadness, but it's still kind of him to think so. ]
What did you sacrifice?

[ if only it was touch week so he could squeeze her shoulder ]
Too much to count. The lives of my soldiers. The livelihoods of our people as the war razed their fields and towns.
It's hard to think of anyone who didn't suffer for it.

Yes, and no. There is no war without sacrifice, but it's easy for me to say that, living in a manor with no concern of wages.
But maybe we should've just surrendered, if we were going to lose anyway. Is independence worth all that sacrifice? I don't know.

Did you agree with the reasoning behind the war? Did you want your country to be part of what that stood for?
Would the people under you have wanted it?
[ there's a reason they were independent in the first place, isn't there? ]

[ me closing my eyes as i try to sort out 3h plot ]
Some wanted to side with the Empire, some wanted to resist.
Trying to align a country's worth of people is no easy task.

It isn't, but that's why leaders of nations are as incredible as they can be terrible.
